Highlights in the History of the Chevrolet Corvette

History of the Chevrolet Corvette - Buff Whelan Chevrolet - Sterling Heights, MI

The iconic Chevrolet Corvette is officially celebrating its 65th birthday in 2018. This sports car is considered one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road, and it’s easy to see why. Throughout the course of its history, though, it’s undergone some significant changes.

Let’s looks at the history of the Chevrolet Corvette and what, exactly, made it the legend it is today.

Chevrolet first introduced the Corvette in 1953 during the New York Auto Show. The car’s display received so much attention that General Motors decided to make a production version available to the public. Only 300 were built in the first model year, but this number quickly increased to 3,640 for the 1954 version. Needless to say, demand for this sports car was high.

For the second generation, Chevy brought out the Stingray coupe, setting the stage for the current branding. As the Corvette continued to grow in popularity, Chevrolet saw no reason to make any major changes, keeping the styling relatively the same during the third generation.

Big changes came during the fourth generation, though, with the first complete redesign for the vehicle in over 20 years. In 1993, the Corvette celebrated its 40th birthday with a Ruby Red edition.

For the fifth generation, drastic changes came for the Corvette with new features and components that you will recognize in today’s models. The Z06 was re-introduced, staking a claim as the highest performance Corvette model ever. For the sixth generation, drivers revelled in a larger interior and a new engine.

This leads us to the latest generation –the current Chevrolet Corvette. This svelte sports car has a sculpted, muscular physique that is the complete opposite of its design in the 1990s. For 2018, Chevy is even adding a new Carbon 65 Edition, which will have only 650 models made.
